A Special Occasion, ASOS & Karen Millen

Today was a very special day for a lovely pair of friends.

Being the novice blogger that I am, I forgot to bring my camera - so I'm very sorry but there are no pictures to share.

The special occasion was the wedding of ACK and YT; a couple that I can safely say are one of the most compatible couples I know. ACK is your classic class clown who likes to goof around making exaggerated poses and YT is the outgoing, fun-loving and open-minded gal who can take it (and I dare say enjoys to). They get each other - and I think that that is a fundamental part of any sort of partnership; without that connection you simply can't expect to stay connected.

This is the Karen Millen dress that I wore to the wedding.
The ceremony was a genuine one, with lots of fun, laughter and of course a lot of alcohol and what we call "jialat-ness"*. Just the way I know both ACK and YT would have wanted it. I am very happy for the both of them - congratulations and I really do think that the two of you are quite simply made for each other.

I did notice something at the wedding; quite a number of us were decked out in Karen Millen (myself included) or ASOS (www.asos.com).  There were also a significant number of Chanel bags and pairs of Louboutins (this I understand - I am, fortunately or unfortunately, a fan of both).

Karen Millen is quite popular here in Singapore; and there is quite a proliferation of cut-label stores that sell Karen Millen dresses at very affordable prices. Their dresses are also easy to like as they often have conventional and classy silhouettes enhanced with structured modernity and design. I understand why I bump into a lot of Karen Millen, and although I have to be very careful when buying Karen Millen (you should not be too surprised if you bump into someone else wearing the same dress) I have caved in and bought a couple.

What I find more interesting is that more and more Singaporeans are starting to dress themselves from the British online store ASOS. Just the other day I was at the Butter Factory and bumped into at least three girls who told me that they had bought their dresses from ASOS. I myself was wearing a dress from ASOS! I was again reminded of this at tonight's wedding, when Nat, one of my closest friends arrived in a lovely floor-length red boob tube dress from ASOS.

I must say that I am a fan of the online store. Especially when there is free international shipping available. Aside from that being an obvious draw; they are good at updating their website with new designs at relatively affordable prices. I am particularly grateful for their "Petite" range; although I wish that they would make more of their clothing in Petite size. I am often very jealous of the sheer range of dresses taller built girls have available to themselves.

One of my new ASOS dresses.
ASOS must be making a bundle from us Singaporean girls; and with better quality products, I am certain are giving Singaporean blogshops a run for their money. The girls at my office are all crazy about ASOS too and it is not uncommon to see new packages arrive in the office and us girls crowding around to see what new dresses either one of us have received. Just last weekend, I found out that even guys have started to buy from ASOS, one male friend of my even proudly announced the his shoes were from ASOS, and so was his shirt (which apparently only cost him SGD 15!).
Another of my new ASOS dresses! Can't wait!

If you have not bought from ASOS yet, you really should give it a shot; but only during the "free international shipping" period.

Very recently Net-a-Porter announced it's first "free international shipping" period. I was excited about this but unfortunately could not find anything that I liked and could afford. :( I really do hope that they have hopped onto the bandwagon of free international shipping and I hope that other reputable online shops (like Victoria's Secret) will too (plllleeeeease).

Although, that would of course be of great detriment to my bank account! :p

*According to Wikipedia's page devoted to "Singlish vocabulary" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singlish_vocabulary), the definition of Jialat is as follows: "Literally means "sapping strength". Used to describe being in trouble or a terrible situation." To my friends "Jialat" more often than not means that you drink and party to the point that you're in trouble or in a terrible situation.
